The 2023 edition of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities is celebrated on the 3rd of december, as it has been each year for the past 20 years. Today, we focus on this day devoted to inclusion.
2023 International Day of Persons with Disabilities: what is it exactly?
The 3rd of December: a date for a more inclusive and united society
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was created by the UN in 1992 with two objectives in mind:
- Raising awareness of disabilities among the public;
- Support the rights of people suffering from disabilities and of the people helping them.
The United Nations estimates that 1 billion people suffer from a disability across the world. This means 80 million people suffer from a disability in Europe and it represents 14.1% of the French population. Many of these people still face daily challenges and struggle to access their rights.

Laws to protect people suffering from a disability: key dates
Significant progress was made regarding the recognition and the care of disabilities in France, in great part thanks to a series of major laws being:
- The one voted on the 30th of June 1975 marks the official acknowledgement of the State’s duty to help people suffering from disabilities.
- The one voted on the 10th of July 1987 which favours the integration of people with disabilities in the professional world.
- The one voted in 2002 which explains the roles and duties of people partaking in medical and social action.
- The law for the promotion of the equality of rights and chances was voted on the 11th of February 2005. It reinforced the integration of people suffering from disabilities in school and at work. It guarantees them the access to fundamental rights.
Which actions to carry out for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities in 2023?
The 2023’ edition’s theme
Let’s first talk more about the theme that was chosen by the UNESCO for this edition. It is stated as follows: “united in the objective to save and realise sustainable development objectives for, with and by people suffering from disabilities”.
Do you want to make the most of this official date to organise an awareness activity within your structure? Here are a few ideas.
Raising awareness of disabilities among your collaborators during the 2023 International Day of Persons with Disabilities
You can put in place numerous awareness activities within your company and you can find online games or awareness packages to help you do so.
As a sport wheelchair manufacturer, PlayMoovin’ also offers to rent sport wheelchairs. These are made of plastic and they made in priority to raise awareness of disabilities.
It is a unique occasion to talk about disabilities, whether it is visible or not. You allow your employees to put themselves in the place of a person suffering from a disability in the span of a game (wheelchair handball, wheelchair rugby, etc.).
Do not hesitate to read our article about raising awareness of disabilities within companies that talks about this.
Organise an awareness activity at school or in a leisure centre
Debates and conversations around disabilities are ways to talk about inclusion with students. PlayMoovin’ also came up with a wheelchair that is ideal to raise awareness among children because it is adapted to children from preschool up to high school.
It is never too late to make our society more inclusive. Outside of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, you can carry out activities throughout the whole year so contact us if you have an idea!
