However, children who do not suffer from one are not confronted to disabilities and struggle do imagine what the daily life of a person with reduced mobility looks like – and you know this if you are part of the educational community. Raising awareness of disabilities is thus relevant even in primary schools. Two questions arise the: what are the stakes and most importantly, how to change people’s way of thinking on this topic? At PlayMoovin’, we decided to change how the public view people suffering from a disability. We will expose our point of view on the matter.

Why raising awareness of disabilities in primary schools?

Reduce the fears students can have when confronted to disabilities

If you are a teacher, you have certainly found yourself in a situation in which you talk about disabilities to your class. Children speak out but what they say is often full of bias and misconceptions: objectivity is absent. Each child has their own representation of disabilities and what they say has often nothing to do with the reality of what a person with reduced mobility experiences.

But the children are curious, they want to know more and ask questions about disabilities.

Sometimes, they have classmates who suffer from autism, or from different dysfunctional troubles (dyslexia for example) but they do not necessarily understand what it entails. On that note, the inclusion process of someone suffering from a disability remains difficult. The education process can also prove to be difficult for a child suffering from a disability. They feel completely misunderstood and other children do not include them in their social life simply because they do not have a grasp on their disability.

It is one of the reasons why it is important to raise awareness of disabilities among children in primary schools. It is about changing their perception while accounting for the preconceived image that they have of it at the start.

Building a society which is more attentive to disabilities

Carrying out an activity to raise awareness of disabilities in a class or in a school is organising a full-size citizenship course. Students can thus grasp:

The respect for others and the acceptance of the differences;

The values of the Republic.

This interdisciplinary project on disabilities allows particularly to teach essential notions to children who will be part of tomorrow’s society. A lot of this process is about:

Empathy;

Solidarity.

Imagine a world where everyone would live in harmony with others, whether they have a disability or not. Judgement would be completely unnecessary and difference would be more of an opportunity than a problem. In order to create such a world, raising awareness of disabilities should be done as early as possible. It is why it is necessary to:

Explain disabilities in schools;

Change people’s minds towards disabilities.

How to explain disabilities to students?

Raising awareness of difficulties that people with reduced mobility face among the youth with the help of resources

The ministry of National Education set up a series of educational documents which can serve as points of reference to organise an activity to raise awareness of disabilities in primary schools. We have listed a few of these points here.

Point number 1: videos as a good way to talk about disabilities

Among the videos that are recommended by the Ministry of National Education, we can for example talk about “La para et tétraplégie” (paraplegia and tetraplegia) which is part of the Handico series available on Lumni. This film shows to children the daily difficulties a paraplegic children face. It can be the starting point of a more in-depth investigation on raising awareness of disabilities in primary schools.

Point number 2: reading to serve awareness of disabilities

Students love stories so why not use that to start a debate on disabilities and get rid of some stereotypes at the same time?

Here is a selection of albums or books that are interesting for different age groups:

The Elmer collection is perfect for children that are in preschool and emphasises the breadth of a society composed of different people.

“Un personage extraordinaire” (an extraordinary person) talks about the story of someone suffering from autism through the touching words of his brother.

The Milan publishing company offers the reader an opportunity to think about the possible efforts that can be done to improve the life of people suffering from a disability.

Carrying out an activity during the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities can represent the occasion to realise a project with your students. Created by the UN in 1992, it takes place each year on the 3rd of December. It aims to:

Raise awareness of the importance of the schooling of children suffering from a disability;

Start a dialogue situation between children and their teachers;

Bring focus to all the local-scale actions carried out for that objective by associations working in the educational field

Thus, if you want to carry out a project surrounding disabilities it can be a good occasion for you to:

Talk with your students about the importance of respect towards one another to reduce discrimination;

Debate on disabilities and let the children talk about their experience;

Meet children from other classes who suffer from a disability;

Have a person with reduced mobility share their experience to your class

Sport is also an effective way to fight against common misconceptions. It is the option we chose at PlayMoovin’ anyway, we are explaining everything about it below.

How to change children’s view of disabilities through sport?

Sport: a solid conveyor to understand disabilities as early as in primary schools

What is more meaningful for a child being in a primary school than to embody a person suffering from a disability to clearly understand what they are experiencing? This what we do at PlayMoovin’ to raise awareness of disabilities in primary schools. You can read what is written below to know more about it.

A wheelchair to raise awareness of disabilities and to experience what it is like

A wheelchair specifically made for raising awareness of children’s disabilities

PlayMoovin’ imagined and conceived a sport wheelchair: the KidsMoovin’. It is a multisport wheelchair made of rigid plastic and it is specifically made for disability awareness sessions with children.

This wheelchair can adapt to all team sports such as:

Rugby;

Handball;

Basketball;

Etc;

A child studying in preschool or in primary school can put himself in the place of a person suffering from a disability in the span of a team game while being well strapped in a colourful sport wheelchair. They also experience the daily problems that people with reduced mobility face.

Carrying out a project on disabilities: an example in a school

At PlayMoovin’, we go across France to allow children to discover the wheelchair. Below you will find an example of what can be done with children in that regard.

In the school of Lempdes, we helped to raise awareness of disabilities among more than 200 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Such an initiative was possible thanks to the help of the city’s sport and physical activity instructor and of the USEP (first cycle sport union?).

During the 45-minute sessions, every pupil had the chance to try:

Racing with the wheelchair;

Wheelchair rugby.

After they have been explained the safety rules, the children can sit on the wheelchair. They then go on a small track to learn how to handle the wheelchair. Once they understand how to handle it, the instructor organises a playful race.

They then explain the basic rules of wheelchair rugby. This sport is a surprising combination of several team sports. The impacts can be as important as in traditional rugby. The ball used in wheelchair rugby is the one used to pay volley ball and it can be thrown in all directions. It must be noted that this sport can be practiced by able-bodied and by people suffering from disabilities. Let us play with the KidsMoovin’!

Raising awareness of disabilities in primary schools allow children to set their biases aside in a world where difference is still not very well accepted.
